Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Hudson Common Council December 13, unanimously approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Kamal Johnson to request that Assemblywoman Didi Barrett introduce legislation to reduce the city speed limit to 25 mph. The current speed limit is 30 mph. “I have mixed feelings,” Johnson said of the request. “Safety is a priority for our city but I’m not completely sold on the fact that lowering the speed limit will help.” The mayor is thinking about not taking the action put forward in the resolution. The resolution reads: “Now therefore, let it be resolved, that Mayor Johnson is authorized and encouraged to write a letter to Assemblymember Barrett requesting special legislation authorizing the city to adopt a 25 mph speed limit on streets in the city of Hudson.” Gunnar Wordon, spokesperson for Barrett’s office, said last week that no official correspondence from the city on the matter has been received and that Barrett will reserve comment until the letter arrives. The city must have permission from New York state to adjust the citywide speed limit.
