Catskill village to borrow $5M to fix water

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media the Catskill Village Board has authorized the issuance of a $5-million bond for improvements to the village water plant and water main. The funds will be used to improve filtration and replace the water main beneath Main Street. However, the status of the bond is tentative, Trafton writes, pending the outcome of the village's application for a water infrastructure improvement grant from the state, due to be submitted in September. Village officials are hoping that $3 million of the project costs will be covered by the grant and $2 million would rest with the village, Trustee Joseph Kozloski said. To improve the filtration, engineers are suggesting the reintroduction of a settling pond at the plant, thereby reducing the volume of biological content in the water and cutting back on the need for chlorination, Kozloski said. In February, the board approved the issuance of a $250,000 bond to replace one of the filters at the water plant and to purchase new water meters and new billing software.
