State says inmate died after altercation; another inmate died at Greene facility

Feb 18, 2019 12:56 am
Lauren Stanforth reports in the Albany Times Union that after attention from media around the world and pop stars such as rapper Cardi B, the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision released a little more information Feb. 15 about the inmate who died at Greene Correctional Facility last week. "While it is standard protocol to not comment on an ongoing investigation, the Department is providing additional facts on the death of Anthony Myrie given the abundance of misinformation in circulation," the new statement reads. The additional information about the death of the 24-year-old Myrie, who was serving a sentence for an attempted drug sale in New York City, was that he died after having a "three-on-one fight with other incarcerated individuals." Officials say that no corrections officers used force during the incident. The DOCCS statement says that Myrie was examined by medical staff, "who found no injuries as a result of the incident." Officials say he was then sent to a holding area to be interviewed by security, but complained of chest pain, and "was immediately returned to the medical unit for further evaluation when he collapsed, unconscious and unresponsive," according to the DOCCS statement provided by spokesperson Thomas Mailey. "At that point, medical staff began emergency response and called for outside emergency medical services. He was transported by ambulance to Albany Medical Center for further treatment where he was, ultimately, pronounced dead," the statement from officials reads. That information is at odds with what the family of Myrie reported last week about his final hours. Myrie's wife and brother said he was on the phone with his wife on Monday, Feb. 11 when correction officers came to place him in a solitary housing cell, called "The Box." Myrie's wife says the family member of another inmate confirmed that he had been sent to solitary confinement during the day Monday. But when Myrie's wife called the Greene Correctional Facility later that day she was told he was in the general population. Around 4:30 p.m. prison officials called her and said that Myrie was in critical condition, according to the family's social media posts. They say that around 5:20 p.m. officials called and told them that Myrie was dead. And, in related news, The Daily Freeman reported Feb. 15 that another inmate died at the Greene Correctional Facility two days before Myrie got there. Orleans County resident Delmus R. Tanner, Jr., 38, died at the prison on Nov. 13. A Grand Jury is, reportedly, going to review the death certificate listing "strangulation by another," as the cause. The stories are in the Albany Times Union and the The Daily Freeman.
