Rick Karlin reports in the Times Union that New York colleges are a long way from being called "green" or "renewable." For example, SUNY’s largest campus, at Stony Brook, on Long Island, is building 1,000 new dorm rooms powered by natural gas because of a contract there that runs through 2023. The SUNY Oneonta campus currently switches from propane to heating oil during cold snaps. And SUNY Morrisville officials keep getting stymied by bureaucracy when trying to work with a solar farm on a landfill in Madison County. On Nov. 13 state lawmakers heard about the environmental footprint of schools across the state and what changes are being made. SUNY is organizing sixteen campuses, including the University at Albany, to make aggregate purchases of renewable energy with Bard, Ithaca, Skidmore, and Cornell colleges also participating. The school system also prints more than one billion pieces of paper a year, but are moving more communications on the web instead to phase out as many copy machines as possible.
