Marijuana legalization now unlikely

Alyson Martin reports for Cannabis Wire that marijuana legalization now seems unlikely in New York. When Democrats, many of whom ran pro-legalization campaigns, took over the State Senate in January, legalization seemed certain. Turns out, there was not enough support in the legislature, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo did not put his weight behind changing the law. Zach Fink, a reporter for New York 1, Tweeted May 7 that, "Source says one of the key reasons marijuana legalization likely dead for the year is that there just aren't enough votes in either the Senate or Assembly to make it happen right now. Also, no other state has legalized it legislatively. All have done so through referendum." Cuomo, at one point, wanted to put legalization in the state budget, so it would be easier to pass, but that idea was abandoned. “I would suggest it’s possible he knew this wasn’t going to happen, because of all the opposition that was coming from different points of view,” State Senator Diane Savino said. “He was going to take it on the chin if it didn’t happen. And so, let the legislature take the blame. And that’s kind of the way it shook out. So, will he take another stab at it? I don’t know. Yeah, I think it’s too soon to tell.” Read the full story at Cannabis Wire.
