Emilia Teasdale is reporting in The Columbia Paper the Village of Kinderhook Traffic Calming Committee last month unveiled the findings of a traffic study it commissioned from the engineering firm Parsons Brinkerhoff. The firm studied traffic on Albany, Hudson and Williams streets, Eichybush Road and Gaffney Lane. Route 9 was not included in the survey because, as Village Mayor Jim Dunham said, the village does not have jurisdiction over that road. However, the board is taking steps to request the speed limit be reduced to 30 mph through the village. The study found that speeds in the village overall are not excessive. In his presentation, engineer Ben Wolfe said on some roads drivers reach speeds up to 70 mph in a 30 mph zone, and that most of the speeding happens during the morning commuting time, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Wolfe also talked about the various traffic calming methods that can be used, like speed humps, sidewalk bump-outs at crosswalks and signage.
