If budgets fail, schools can hold second vote
Jun 11, 2020 12:36 pm
Gary Stern reports in the Rockland/Westchester Journal News that as school board and budget voting goes on this week through the mail, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has finally said what districts can do if their budgets are voted down. School districts can hold a second vote, an executive order issued June 10 says. Those second votes will not happen before July 9. Assemblyperson Amy Paulin, a Democrat from Westchester County, had sponsored a bill that would allow a second vote. She thanked Cuomo for taking action to, "provide some certainty to districts and enable them to avoid making the draconian cuts that would be required if they were forced to adopt a contingency budget." On June 7, Cuomo signed an executive order allowing school election ballots to be counted if they are postmarked by June 16. The original deadline for ballots to be received by school districts was June 9. Read more about this story in the Rockland/Westchester Journal News.
