Bear breaks into Phoenicia liquor store

Aug 17, 2016 6:30 am

Jay Braman Jr. is reporting in the Daily Freeman on the most recent black bear siting in the Ulster County hamlet of Phoenicia [Fih-NEE-shuh]. The bear was apparently frightened by something on Main Street and was running up the sidewalk. As it approached the front of Phoenicia Wine and Liquors a car scared the bear even more, and it made a quick left turn to hide, crashing through the shop's plate glass door. The store was closed at the time. According to owner Declan Feehan, the bear quickly exited the store and ran down the alley toward the creek. The fate of the bear is unclear. Black bears have become a constant presence in much of the region, except during the cold winter months when they are hibernating. Some of the bears have reportedly entered homes to get food. State Department of Environment Conservation regulations prohibit both incidental and intentional feeding of bears statewide. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
