Cuomo meets with Trump

Feb 13, 2019 12:55 am
Brett Samuels reports for The Hill that Gov. Andrew Cuomo had a show meeting with President Donald Trump Feb. 12 at the White House. Cuomo wanted to convince Trump to eliminate a provision in the Republicans' 2017 tax-cut law that caps the state and local tax deduction at $10,000, raising taxes on many New Yorkers who now cannot write off their local taxes. A spokesperson for Trump claimed the President listened to Cuomo's concerns about the tax issue, and "reiterated the negative impact that high taxes in states like New York have on hardworking families and job creators." Mostly though, Trump changed the subject, telling Cuomo he needed to bring back fracking in New York, with companies injecting water and chemicals underground in order to fracture rocks and release natural gas. Trump claims fracking would invigorate the stagnant upstate New York economy. Rep. Antonio Delgado, meanwhile, on Feb. 12 announced he is cosponsoring the bipartisan Securing Access to Lower Taxes by ensuring Deductibility Act of 2019, or SALT Deductibility Act. He Tweeted Feb. 12, "Glad to cosponsor [a] bipartisan bill to eliminate SALT cap. The 2017 tax law irresponsibly added more than $1 trillion to deficit while creating the cap that results in double taxation for middle- & working-class families. Repealing it is right thing to do."
