Catskill tax base shrinkage causes consternation

Jim Planck in The Daily Mail catalogues Catskill Town Board members future economic fears, at least from what they said at a town meeting Wed., Nov. 27. “We had the cement plants, the knitting mill, the boarding houses,” Councilman Robert Antonelli said. “They’re all gone.” Catskill Town Supervisor Joseph Leggio said that means a smaller tax base. “The town council projects that the future annual revenues collected by the town will be reduced in the coming years,” he said. Leggio said half of the town budget goes to entitlements such as pensions and health care costs, and the rest “to the administration of the town, (which includes) salaries and repair and maintenance of infrastructure.” Planck did not report any suggestions for the coming fiscal crisis besides running the town more like a business.
