Columbia tops Greene in health rankings

Melanie Lekocevic reports for Columbia-Greene Media that in the latest statewide health rankings Columbia County comes in 23rd out of 62 counties, and Greene County ranks 43rd, in overall health outcomes. The national report, released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, compares health factors such as obesity rates, smoking, access to healthy food, air and water quality, teen births, and other factors such as education level, employment rates, housing, and transportation. “This is an improvement over the last one I saw, where Greene County was 61 out of 62,” Ron Rouse from Greene County Rural Health Network said. “Only the Bronx was ranked worse.” Locally, the rate of families having severe housing problems was 15 percent in Columbia County and 18 percent in Greene County. Columbia County ranked fifth in the quality of life category, with Greene County at 41st. There is one physician for every 2,030 residents in Columbia County, and a hospital.
