Chatham events in limbo as state of emergency continues

May 14, 2020 6:00 am
Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Chatham Village Board held a physically distanced meeting May 11. Mayor John Howe acknowledged it was likely the Capital Region, of which Columbia County is a part, will not hit the benchmarks needed to reopen by May 15. Village trustee Melony Spock announced the Chatham Area Business and Arts annual SummerFest, a village-wide event held annually in July, has been canceled this year. She said the organization is still hoping to be in a position to hold OctoberFeast in the fall. “We want to be safe,” she said. Howe said village Memorial Day events have been canceled and he was "99.9 percent” sure the annual county Firefighters’ Convention, which Chatham was going to host this summer, would also be canceled. He said currently the county fair, which takes place on the fairgrounds in the village over Labor Day weekend, was still on. “We’re not optimistic [though],” he said of the fair. Trustee Lenore Packet, who read the DPW report during the meeting, said of the crew, “They are not going into any buildings” for the time being. Leaf pick-up in the village will begin again May 18, and the crew will get back to reading water meters. DPW employee Phil Genovese said the DPW workers were “eager to get back into things.” The Village Board will next meet, 7 p.m., Mon., Jun. 8. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
