Hillsdale board hears plea for 'No Engine Breaks' sign

Lorna Cherot Littleway is reporting for The Columbia Paper Hillsdale resident Craig Norton attended the town board meeting June 12, and asked that a "No Engine Breaks" sign be posted on Route 23. Norton believes the sign would help address the issue of the noise generated by trucks as they enter Hillsdale from the west. Norton, a resident of the hamlet for 25 years, described the din created by large, short-haul trucks as ranging from “annoying to unbearable,” Norton said, “I love [the new] sidewalks and street lights but would trade for one lousy sign.” Town Supervisor Peter Cipkowski pointed out that the state Department of Transportation has been unreceptive to town requests for signs to lower speed limits along sections of Route 22. Cipkowski suggested that Norton organize a petition drive among hamlet residents for a “No Engine Brakes” sign, at the same time acknowledging that some residents are averse to “sign pollution” in the hamlet.
