Coeymans Town Board talks chicken
Aug 28, 2020 2:30 pm
Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media several residents in the hamlet of Coeymans have written letters to the Coeymans Town Board expressing their displeasure over their neighbors raising chickens. “Recently, our neighbors acquired one rooster and one hen, which are being kept in a fenced-in dog pen with a makeshift cardboard box that is being utilized as a chicken coop,” according to a letter received from a Westerlo Street family. “Upon further discussion with the family, we were advised they have approximately 28 more hens they are raising inside their home that are currently too young to be kept in the outside pen. ...” The family has multiple concerns, including the possibility of attracting predators and rats, as well as the presence of a disruptive rooster. Town Supervisor George McHugh read the letter aloud during a recent public meeting to start the discussion. A second letter complained of similar issues with another home in the hamlet. Town board member Kenneth Burns said he raises chickens on his property, but he has 46 acres of land. “When you are living in the hamlet, and you are living so close to houses… I hate to tell anybody that they can’t have chickens. If you have four chickens, you get enough eggs from four chickens to supply a family of five, easily. But you need an appropriate pen.” The town board did not take any action on the issue this month and there was indication if any is forthcoming. Read the full story in The Ravena News-Herald.
