Kinderhook village residents hear more about CCAs

Jan 09, 2020 1:45 pm
Emilia Teasdale is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Kinderhook Village Board held a hearing December 18, to receive public comment on a local law to join a Community Choice Aggregation, or CCA program. The law would expand the ability of residents to purchase electricity as a group, thereby saving money, among other benefits. A representative of Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance, or MEGA, was present and presented information on the program. MEGA is one of three companies licensed by New York to be a CCA administrator. The village board last fall signed an agreement with MEGA to explore the option of joining the CCA. A local law is necessary for the village to formally become a part of the group. Mayor Jim Dunham said the village intends to proceed with the proposal to join the CCA, but the board did not vote on whether to adopt the local law during its December 18 meeting. The MEGA representative made a presentation at the Kinderhook Town Board meeting in December, as well. CCAs are newly established by state law and regulated by the Public Service Commission.
