Patricia Doxsey is reporting for the Daily Freeman Ulster County lawmakers will hold a public hearing December 10, about a proposal to shrink the county Legislature by two members. The hearing will focus on whether to ask voters in November 2020 if the Legislature should be reduced from 23 to 21 members. Ulster County voters in 2006 approved the creation of a charter form of government and downsized the Legislature from 33 to 23 members, transforming the body to one in which each legislator represents a single district. If a reduction to 21 members is approved, the smaller Legislature would be elected in November 2023 and seated in January 2024. Supporters of the measure say a smaller Legislature also would lead to "more definitive action, a cleaner debate and less gridlock." Opponents say the change would increase the size of legislative districts, making it more difficult for the part-time lawmakers to meet with their constituents and represent their needs.
