Emilia Teasdale is reporting in The Columbia Paper the Ichabod Crane school board was presented with information at its meeting this month showing a slight uptick in student enrollment during the 2017-18 school year. However, with a total of 1,800 students, the district's student population remains below the 2007-08 school year total, when nearly 2,200 students were enrolled. Superintendent Michael Vanyo said the 2018 graduating class of 134 students is one of the smallest in recent years. There are more than 150 students in both the junior and sophomore classes, but the freshmen class has only 131 students. Vanyo said the 2017-18 kindergarten class is much larger than last year, and the district increased the number of kindergarten classrooms as a result. He said understanding enrollment trends helps during the budgeting process, especially as it relates to staffing. The district has already begun the process of drafting its 2018-19 spending plan.
