Officials discuss mountaintop fly car

Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media officials from Greene County's mountaintop addressed county legislators Feb. 6, in an effort to improve emergency response services in their community. Hunter Town Supervisor Daryl Legg, Hunter Town Board member Dolph Semenza, Lexington Town Supervisor John Berger and Windham Town Supervisor Bob Pelham spoke about issues specific to the area’s paramedic fly car, which is stationed in Windham. They appealed to lawmakers, requesting the fly car be relocated to Hunter and that an additional vehicle be stationed in Lexington. The Windham fly car's current location, near Route 23, makes it possible to respond to accidents in the valley, it is not the ideal place for serving the greater mountaintop community, Legg said. “For the guy having a stroke in West Kill, you might as well call the coroner,” he said. All four officials previously made their case to the county Emergency Medical Services Board and were told the mountaintop did not have a high enough call volume to relocate the car and have an additional vehicle, according to Legg. Semenza said Hunter ranks third in the county for the number of calls, after Catskill and Coxsackie. When the EMS board voted on a proposal for an additional mountaintop fly car last fall, it was defeated by one vote. Legislators last week spoke in favor of relocating the emergency vehicle.
