May 27, 2013 7:02 am
Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail the village of Tannersville paid tribute to the past and present soldiers of the Mountaintop during its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony, Sun., May 26. The parade kicked off in blustery winds and sporadic rain, marching from the Bank of Greene County to the American Legion Veteran’s Monument on Main Street. The speaker was Dr. Patrick Darfler-Sweeney, superintendent of the Hunter-Tannersville Central School District. He spoke of the history of Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day in the years after the Civil War. Memorial Day was made official May 5, 1868 and New York was the first state to recognize it in 1873, he said. Darfler-Sweeney called the day “deeply significant in our culture.” Read the full story in The Daily Freeman.
