Sarah Trafton is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media administrative personnel from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office moved into the new county jail in Coxsackie last week. The sheriff’s office moved to temporary quarters on Mansion Street in Coxsackie in February 2019, where it has remained until now. The county anticipates it will begin to house people at the new facility starting in July. As of Fri., Apr. 23, the county had 37 people in custody — two women and 35 men, county Sheriff Pete Kusminsky said. The new facility will have 16 cells for women and 48 for men. The state Commission of Correction also requires that 10 percent of the cells remain open. The new building is designed for direct supervision, where up to 32 people can be monitored by one corrections officer at a post within the pod equipped with security footage, Kusminsky said. The 5,600-square-foot garage contains a bay specifically intended for storing vehicular evidence — the first evidence storage of its kind in the county, he said. The sheriff department’s smaller boats, UTVs and other equipment will also be stored in that space. The garage also contains a training room for defensive or lecture-based training. And the sheriff’s office will start processing pistol permits at the new building on April 26, Kusminsky said. There are several multi-purpose rooms in the jail where individuals will be able to earn a GED, work on resume writing and see counselors or clergy members,. The Rev. Richard Turpin of Catskill's Second Baptist Church will be one of the clergy members available. Until the new facility opens, the people detained by Greene County are being housed at the Albany, Ulster and Columbia county jails. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
