Saugerties Supervisor looks forward with new police chief

William J. Kemble reports in the Daily Freeman that Saugerties Supervisor Fred Costello hopes that problems in his town's police department are over in 2024. Costello said, “We all know the challenges that law enforcement faces from a recruitment perspective and instability does not help but make those challenges worse.... We went through a period of instability…and it’s clear that complicated our efforts the recruit new officers. With Chief Nuzzo, that goes away instantly and I think he brings credibility to the department.” Retired state Lt. Col. Robert Nuzzo becomes chief on Jan. 1, after months of controversy between the Town Board and former Chief Joseph Sinagra. The former chief retired after a state report recommended the firing of an officer, which led to the Sinagra being put on leave. Costello said he expects the tranisition to Nuzzo will go smoothly.
