Melanie Lekocevic is reporting for Capital Region Independent Media the Coeymans Democrats May 11, nominated a slate of five candidates for town offices. The caucus was held at the Mosher Park Pavilion in the village of Ravena. Cindy Rowzee, the Coeymans town clerk for five years, is the Democratic candidate for town supervisor. If elected, Rowzee would be the second woman in town history to hold the post, according to the Coeyman Democratic Committee. Sara Pruiksma and Yvonne Shackelton were chosen as town board candidates. Both are making their first bid for elected office. Sherle Slingerland was chosen as the party's candidate for town clerk and incumbent Town Justice Thomas Frese was nominated for reelection to the town court. Rowzee, Shackelton and Pruiksma are running together, calling themselves The A Team. Rowzee said she decided to run for town supervisor over concerns about the state of politics in the town. “I want to bring the people of the town together, to work together to make Coeymans a better community to live in,” she said. “...I want to put the town leadership back into the hands of the town board and to increase community engagement in government.”Shackelton has been a member of the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Board of Education since 2018. She wants to give residents a bigger voice in the community. “...I firmly believe that decisions about what happens in Coeymans should not be made solely by five people in a room, and certainly not by an autocratic dictatorship. ...I believe everyone should have a voice,” Shackelton said. Pruiksma is running for office because she wants the town to unify and become prosperous under the leadership of a fair government, she said. “...I want to use arts and culture to help bring our town into progressive, economic success and push Coeymans toward positive change — for the betterment of the people,” she said.
