Mike Ryan reports in The Daily Mail Route 17 has been officially reopened, more than a year after the half-mile stretch of road vanished in the flood waters of the East Kill, during Tropical Storm Irene. Route 17 serves as an important link between New York State routes 23 and 23A, connecting the towns of Ashland, Jewett, Lexington and Hunter. Storm waters obliterated a laid-stone retaining wall that supported the roadway and withstood many floods since the 1940's. Since the storm, motorists have been forced to navigate a steep detour along Coos Road or avoid the area altogether by traveling on Route 296 between Windham to Hunter. Other post-storm projects in Greene County near completion, include the bridge replacement on County Route 10 in Ashland, the box culvert on the Huntersfield Creek outside of Prattsville, and the reopening of County Route 6 in Lexington and the Route 40 bridge in Hensonville.
