National Grid asks customers to conserve

Larry Rulison is reporting for the Times Union National Grid is making an appeal to its customers to turn down air conditioners and hold off on using large appliances, like washing machines, until after peak hours July 30. With temperatures expected to reach the 90s Tuesday, the utility sent an email to customers asking them to voluntarily consider making the energy-saving choices between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., Tuesday. "Tomorrow's the day to curb energy use," National Grid said in the email sent Monday. "We're anticipating a high energy demand... It's time to unleash your energy-saving super powers. Voluntarily saving energy ... is good for you, the environment and our communities." The energy demand increases dramatically on hot days as people blast their air conditioner units when they get home from work, thereby placing a great strain on the electric grid.
