Columbia Co. STR tax still a way off

Aug 02, 2019 2:15 pm
Jeanette Wolfberg is reporting for The Columbia Paper Columbia County officials are thinking about imposing occupancy taxes on short term rentals, like AirBnB, and it will likely take until 2021 for the law to go into effect. In preparation, the county Board of Supervisors Subcommittee on Occupancy Taxes met July 17 and identified questions to be resolved before the proposal is presented to the public and the full board. Board Chairman Matt Murell has asked that the questions be answered by February, thereby allowing time for a public hearing before a board vote on a resolution can be held in March or April. If the resolution is approved, the county will have to await approval by both houses of the state legislature. That approval could take at least a year, said Assistant County Attorney Heidi Cochrane. The open questions include: Will the tax include the city of Hudson? How will the county allocate the tax revenue? And, how will the county collect the taxes and enforce collection? The next meeting of the Subcommittee of Occupancy Taxes is 4 p.m., Wed., Aug. 21, at 401 State Street, in Hudson. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
