State expanding quarantine to battle emerald ash borer

Feb 06, 2013 7:08 am
The Associated Press is reporting New York will expand a quarantine on ash wood products across most of the southern part of the state to combat the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer. The beetle's larvae have destroyed tens of millions of trees as it has moved steadily east from Michigan, where it was discovered in 2002. New York now prohibits untreated firewood from entering the state, and it is forbidden to move the wood more than 50 miles from its source within the state. The new quarantine will take effect May 1. The state quarantine is now in place for the entirety of Albany, Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Schoharie, Ulster and 28 other counties. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
