Federal judge orders census counting continue

Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics a federal judge in California ruled late September 24, that the U.S. Census can continue through October 31. The decision reverses a Trump administrative order that would have halted the survey on September 30. The district court ruling is a victory, for now, for advocates who had been alarmed by the decision to end the national head count early. CNN is reporting the National Urban League, the city of Los Angeles and several other groups sued the government, asking for a preliminary injunction to block the government from concluding the count early. In a hearing conducted before the ruling was issued, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh expressed concern with the government's decision to change the deadline, pointing out that it is unlikely the Census Bureau will reach its own 99 percent standard for completion by the end of September. Koh's decision is expected to be appealed by the Justice Department. Read more at nystateofpolitics [dot] com and at cnn [dot] com.
