Nixon submits 65K signatures to secure primary spot

Jul 13, 2018 6:30 am
David Lombardo is reporting for Capitol Confidential gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon submitted more than 65,000 signatures July 12, presumably to secure a primary against against two-term incumbent Andrew M. Cuomo. Nixon was one of more than 200 candidates running for state office who submitted signatures to the state Board of Elections this week. Some statewide candidates, like Cuomo and Republican Marc Molinaro, qualified for the ballot through their party convention. Nixon needed 15,000 signatures from Democratic voters statewide, with at least 100 from 14 of New York’s congressional districts. The state BOE reviews the petitions submitted by candidates for any obvious errors, but there is essentially a presumption that the signatures are valid. The real scrutiny comes from opposing campaigns, which have to file general objections and then specific objections, and the challenges can arise from a variety of issues. General objections must be filed three days after petitions are submitted to the state. Primary elections will held September 13. Read the full story at Capitol Confidential.
