HHA board discusses Bliss roach problem

Dec 07, 2020 6:04 am
Jeanette Wolfberg is reporting for The Columbia Paper the Hudson Housing Authority Board of Commissioners met November 18, hearing from residents about how roaches have infested some apartments in the 135-unit Bliss complex, for which the authority is responsible. Commissioner Claire Cousin said one thing residents complain about is that in some apartments, “It’s raining roaches.” The topic has come up at several previous meetings and some commissioners suggested treating all of Bliss Tower at the same time, but this could require tower residents to find accommodations for at least one night elsewhere. Until “COVID set us back,” the authority was treating individual apartments once a month or once a week, said Hudson Housing Authority Executive Director Tim Mattice. “We can’t spend money on something that isn’t working,” Cousin said. Having an exterminator treat one apartment will not eliminate roaches from neighboring apartments, she said. “Some people aren’t mobile,” said Commissioner Rebecca Wolff, who questioned whether the whole building could be fumigated in a single day. Another concern raised was that some residents refuse to allow exterminators into their apartments. Mattice said arrangements can be made with the Fire Department and a bus company to prepare the building and move the residents. He will set up a meeting with Pestech Pest Control of Kingston to discuss possibilities. The November 18 meeting was the first for the authority's newest commissioner, Rebecca Borrer of Hudson. The board now has seven members. Read the full story in The Columbia Paper.
