ICC sixth graders going back to in-person learning

Natasha Vaughn is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media some students in the Ichabod Crane school district will soon be receiving more in-person instruction. Beginning next week sixth-grade students will attend classes in person four days a week instead of two. There are 118 in-person students in the sixth grade, without the students who are fully remote, Ichabod Crane Superintendent Suzanne Guntlow said. Grade sizes typically range from 110 to 150 students and the district has been working with the Columbia County Department of Health to ensure the safety of all staff and students. This school year students enrolled in Ichabod’s kindergarten through fifth grade have been attending classes in person every day. Students in sixth through 12th grade have been operating on a hybrid learning model in which they are in person on either Monday and Tuesday, or Thursday and Friday. Everyone studies remotely on Wednesday. Guntlow said the district is now targeting students that are struggling and are most at risk. "We’re trying to bring those kids back in seventh through 12th grade for more in-person days. So instead of looking at an entire grade level, which we can’t accommodate, we’re trying to really target those kids who are most at risk,” she said. The district also announced that starting March 15, seventh- through 12th-grade students will use a synchronous instruction model of learning. Effective next week, those students will be required to join a daily Google Meet. "With the synchronous learning this will provide the best of both worlds,” Guntlow said. “The kids will have much more face-to-face interactions with their teachers. They’ll be on a Meet each day in each class, really making sure they’re more engaged.” Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
