Sports betting could come to New York

Bruce Golding in The New York Post reports on how long it might be before sports betting is legal in New York, after a Supreme Court ruling May 14. The conservative members of the Supreme Court voted to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 as unconstitutional, allowing states to legalize gambling on sports. Research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming predicted last year predicted that New York and 31 states would legalize sports betting if the Supreme Court ruled this way. State Sen. John Bonacic, a Republican from Orange County, introduced a bill to do that last month, in anticipation of the court ruling. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, though, isn't sure that sports betting will be legal in New York in time for football season. “We’ll do an economic analysis and a legal analysis, but nothing’s going to happen this year because there’s literally just a number of days left in the legislative session and this would be a very big issue to tackle," Cuomo said.
