Dutchess Co. Sheriff issues fraud warning

Nov 18, 2019 1:30 pm
MidHudsonNews [dot] com is reporting the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office has issued a fraud warning for the residents of Dutchess County and surrounding areas about scams that seem to be on the increase. The most recent scam involves fake warrants. The victims received a call from a person saying they were law enforcement and advised them there was a warrant out for their arrest. The victim is then told the warrant will be purged if they send money right away. The Sheriff’s Office had several reports of this scam in November. During those calls, the caller identified himself as “Sgt. Mark from the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.” The Sheriff’s Office said it is imperative to refrain from sending any money to an unknown person until the situation described has been confirmed through an independent source. If it is a scam, once the money is sent it is very difficult, and most times impossible, to get it back. Anyone who thinks they may have been the victim of a scam are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 845-486-3800 or via the tipline at 845-605-CLUE or dcsotips [at] gmail [dot] com.
