Cuomo takes on the president at Ellis Island inauguration

Jan 02, 2019 12:45 am
Shane Goldmacher reports in The New York Times that Gov. Andrew Cuomo was sworn in for a third term on Jan. 1 on Ellis Island, and he spoke about a “new justice agenda.” He cast himself as the defense against President Donald Trump without using his name. Standing in the country's historic immigration center, he said, the president “has sought to demonize our differences and make our diversity our greatest weakness rather than our greatest strength.” The speech was often not about New York. “America’s only threat is from within: It is the growing division amongst us,” Cuomo said, although he previously has denied he is running for president in 2020. The Times listed his legislative priorities: "legalizing recreational marijuana; making Election Day a holiday; ending cash bail at the state level; enacting more restrictive gun laws; strengthening abortion rights protections; banning corporate money in state elections; tightening rent-control protections; and instituting automatic voter registration." Democrats now control both houses of the legislature in Albany, so getting that agenda passed should be easier than when he backed less progressive ideas in his first two terms.
