It's May! Special all-vinyl broadcast, featuring music from Nicaragua's Caribbean coast communities recorded during the mid- to late-1980s by the popular bands of that era. The songs are just a sampling from a vast repertoire that accompanies the annual Maypole celebration – a vestige of the region's British colonial past – at a time when the festival was undergoing both a political and a generational shift, and being rebranded as "Mayo Ya!". The songs are quintessentially "costeño", reflecting the myriad cultural influences that have created this unique musical genre. Music for the Masses invites you on an ethnomusicological excursion of sound and rhythm. Discover the music of established and emerging artists, both signed and unsigned, on the international music scene. Expect the unexpected. You might want to pack a map and a sandwich. For the avid globe-hopper and armchair traveler alike. Broadcast live from the Carnegie Room of the Catskill Library.
