Software crash interrupts state tests

Apr 04, 2019 12:34 am
Justin Murphy reports in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle that state testing was interrupted this week as software being used for English language arts tests in grades 3-8 crashed April 2, which caused the state to cancel all online testing April 3. The New York education department sent out a message to schools reporting, "a slowness with students being able to submit the test" and told schools to have students wait 10 minutes and try to resubmit their answers. About 25 percent of districts across the state used online testing this year, and more than 84,000 students did not have problems submitting their tests on April 2. "NYSED will use this time to work with Questar to ensure the system will operate smoothly when (computer-based testing) resumes," said Emily DeSantis, the Education Department spokesperson. The teachers union has long been critical of computer testing, and New York State United Teachers, called on the state to stop testing on computers "to ensure that our children will not be penalized because of the mistakes adults have made in rolling out this faulty system."
