Sarah Kanouse is an interdisciplinary artist examining citizenship, public space, landscape, and historical memory through arts practice, writing, and occasional curatorial work. Her frequently collaborative work takes many forms: web platforms and multimedia, print materials, group events, video, and radio transmissions. Recent transmission arts projects have included “Voices of America,” a collaboration with Lee Azzarello to create a platform for the exchange and remixing of news coverage of the 2008 US election on the United States government’s international broadcasting service, Voice of America. Sarah’s individual and collaborative work has appeared in exhibitions and screenings mounted by the Smart Museum (Chicago); Sea and Space Gallery (Los Angeles); The Unconvention (Minneapolis); Artlink (Belgrade, Serbia); Worth Ryder Gallery (University of California Berkeley); Columbia College (Chicago); Mess Hall (Chicago); SOFA Gallery (Indiana University); Kupfer Center (University of Wisconsin Madison); and the Centro Cultural Rosa Luxemburg (Buenos Aires, Argentina), among many others. Sarah's writings have been published in the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, Acme, The Democratic Communiqué, Critical Planning and Art Journal. She received her undergraduate education from Yale University (1997) and an MFA in studio art from the University of Illinois (2004). She teaches specialized classes in time-based media and art and ecology, as well as core courses in the undergraduate and graduate Intermedia programs at the University of Iowa. She lives and works in Iowa City, IA, USA.
