The Daily Freeman reports that an Ulster County woman and another former correction officer were convicted July 23 for beating a convict in 2013 at the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill, Dutchess County. Saugerties resident Kathy Scott was sentenced to eight years and four months in prison, while George Santiago Jr. got seven years and three months for beating a state prison inmate and then falsifying records to cover up the attack. Three other former guards, who pleaded guilty, were charged with punching and kicking inmate Kevin Moore after he questioned why he was being placed in a mental health unit overnight. Moore spent 17 days in a hospital after that with facial fractures, five broken ribs, and a collapsed lung. In other local prison news, Mid-Hudson News reports that a Greene Correctional Facility prisoner attacked a corrections officer at the Coxsackie facility July 23. The officer and the inmate go unnamed in the story, but the report says the inmate punched the officer several times. The corrections officer then was transported to the Albany Medical Center by ambulance.
