Ulster County sheriff draws criticism for Facebook post

Nov 13, 2017 12:03 am

Brian Hubert is reporting in the Daily Freeman Ulster County Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum posted to his office's official Facebook page on Veterans Day urging people to boycott the National Football League by tuning out football telecasts and not attending games on Sunday. Van Blarcum, a Democrat, told the Daily Freeman, he has finally drawn the line on the protests that have attracted attention countrywide. “There’s no excuse for what they’re doing,” Van Blarcum said. He said professional athletes should be proud, and it is only because they live in America they have the career they have. As of Saturday night, the post had been shared more than 161 times and had drawn 261 reactions and 44 comments, some in support and others expressing anger. Van Blarcum's fellow Democrat, Ulster County Legislator David Donaldson, of Kingston, said it was inappropriate for the sheriff to be weighing in "on those sorts of issues." In 2015, Van Blarcum attracted national attention with another post on the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page. In that post, he urged all licensed gun owners to carry their firearms at all times.
