Voters in the Cairo-Durham Central School District approved a $28.9 million building project by a vote of 284 to 263 on Dec. 11. "We are grateful for the community's support in today's vote," said Superintendent Anthony Taibi. "This project is an investment in academics and our future while also addressing some infrastructure items.” The $28.9 million capital project will modernize outdated classrooms, create new science labs and repair athletic fields. The annual local share will be nearly $700,000 a year over 22 years, totaling $15.3 million, District Business Administrator Jeffrey Miriello said. Funding sources include $2.4 million from the district's capital reserves and fund balance, as well as $11.1 million in state building aid. For property owners, the proposal means a tax increase of $33.75 a year for a home assessed at $100,000.
