Tkaczyk proposes a statewide ban on fracking waste
May 16, 2013 12:45 am
Kyle Adams reports in The Daily Mail state Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk introduced a bill Wed., May 15, to ban the transportation of hydraulic fracturing waste products into New York from out-of-state operations. In a prepared statement, Tkaczyk wrote, “New York is under assault. Tens of thousands of hazardous wastes are being shipped here each year from fracking sites in Pennsylvania and other states. These wastes have high levels of heavy metals, carcinogens and other toxic chemicals and compounds, yet they are exempt from the storage and treatment regulations which govern the handling of other hazardous substances.” The proposed legislation would prohibit the treatment, discharge, transportation or storage of the byproducts of the fracking process, statewide. The new bill will now go before the Senate’s Environmental Conservation Committee. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
