Nixon vows state plane rides are only for emergencies

Rachel Silberstein reports at Capitol Confidential that six days before the primary election Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon said on Sept. 7 that if she is elected she will only use state aircraft for emergencies. A New York Times story published the same day reported that Nixon's opponent, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, uses state planes and helicopters more than other big state governors, spending $12.5 million on them in 2017. “All told, Mr. Cuomo flew roughly 50 percent more taxpayer-funded private flights than the next closest governor on the list,” according to the Times. On Labor Day, Cuomo used state aircraft to get from a morning campaign appearance at a Brooklyn parade to the state fair to get publicity for an attendance announcement in the afternoon.
