Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Bernie Sanders lead donations to presidential campaigns from Capital Region voters. Federal Election Commission data shows that across the whole state former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg has raised more than any other Democrat, but locally Sanders got more donations. Sanders and Trump have also raised the most money nationally of any candidates in their parties. In Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington counties, Democrats running for president raised much more than Republicans Trump and former Governor of Massachusetts William Weld. Buttigieg has held at least 18 large-donor fundraisers in New York, while Sanders is raising more money from smaller online donations. Sanders campaign staff says he raised more than $2.4 million from over 58,000 New Yorkers in the month of January 2020 alone, after raising $3.4 million from New Yorkers in all of 2019.
