Hudson's Shared Streets program now weekends only

Aliya Schneider Columbia-Greene Media beginning Mon., Aug. 24, the Hudson Shared Streets program will be reduced to a weekend-only schedule. The program is intended to allow Warren Street pedestrians the ability to walk in the street when the sidewalks are crowded. It also permits businesses to safely expand into parking places. The program will now be in effective from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, on Warren Street between Front and 7th streets. Shared Streets began during the July 4th weekend and has been in force seven days a week since. According to a May survey conducted by the Hudson Development Corporation, most of the 212 respondents said that after the pause order is lifted they would be more comfortable at local businesses if they could be served outdoors. The survey also found that shopping locally would be a priority for most people after the pause order is lifted. On the down side, the 5 mph speed limit for vehicle traffic, creates more traffic on other streets, and disrupts truck and delivery routes, Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jeffrey Hunt said. At the same time, Hunt said the Shared Streets program has been a “wonderful success,” adding that the change makes sense because the pedestrian traffic that the program caters to tends to be generated by visitors on Thursday through Monday.
