New York expands its electric vehicle rebate program

Chelsea Siegal is reporting WTEN-TV an additional $30 million is now available through the state’s Drive Clean Rebate program as a way to encourage drivers to lease or purchase an all-electric car or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The funding and program changes are aimed to increase vehicle affordability and help more New Yorkers lower their carbon footprint while driving. There have been more than 37,000 electric vehicle rebates so far, totaling more than $54 million, provided under NYSERDA’s Drive Clean Rebate program. The program incentive levels for drivers will change starting June 30. The changes include updated rebate levels to incentivize electric vehicles with longer all-electric ranges and a base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of less than $42,000. There are currently more than 50 electric vehicle models available in New York.; 15 have a range of more than 200 miles and are eligible for the rebate. Rebate amounts approved under the program range from $500 to $2,000. New legislation requires all vehicles sold statewide to be electric by 2035. The state is also investing in the rapid build-out of its charging infrastructure with more than 7,000 charging stations currently installed throughout New York.
