Lawsuit says NY is purging voter rolls

Sep 07, 2017 2:14 pm
David Klepper reports for the Associated Press in the Albany Times Union that Common Cause-New York filed a lawsuit Sept. 6 accussing New York of wrongly purging voter rolls. The lawsuit claims the state is removing names of supposedly inactive voters from legal lists if the voter doesn't reply to a notice seeking confirmation of residency. "New York's outdated policies disenfranchise tens of thousands of eligible voters in clear violation of the National Voter Registration Act," said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a group aligned with Common Cause-New York on the lawsuit. In Brooklyn during the presidential election last fall, many voters turned up to find their names missing from the eligible list, instead casting affidavit ballots. The state Board of Elections did not immediately comment on the lawsuit. Read the full story in the Albany Times Union.
