Brian Nearing in the Albany Times Union reports that the state may improve the last surviving preserved site of the once-thriving ice harvesting industry. The state may begin building a new sea wall and a recreational fishing pier next fall along a rocky outcropping called the Nutten Hook across the river from Coxsackie in Greene County if the proposed project is approved. The half-million dollar project by the state Department of Environmental Conservation would be complete on the Stuyvesant side in 2020. "This shoreline stabilization project will improve this community's resiliency by protecting the Nutten Hook site and enhancing recreational access to the Hudson River by constructing a new, 61-foot-long public fishing pier," according to DEC. In the pre-refrigeration era, a brick tower there was a power plant for a commercial ice house used to store blocks cut from the frozen river. The DEC is taking public comments on the project through Dec. 13.
