Saugerties approves cat trapping program

Jun 04, 2019 3:45 pm
William J. Kemble is reporting for the Daily Freeman the village of Saugerties will begin its annual feral cat-trapping program early this year due to complaints about nuisance felines. The village board approved the early start at its meeting June 3. The village plans to pay a consultant $25 per cat for their catch-and-release work, which will include providing one-week notice to pet owners in the immediate areas about where the traps will be set. Village residents are being encouraged to take pictures of their cats to identify the pets in the event they are trapped. The number of cats trapped in the past has varied. Last year four were ensnared, the previous year there were close to 20. Captured felines are evaluated and sterilized by a licensed veterinarian, vaccinated against rabies, and then returned to their original habitat. The non-profit Animalkind operates a similar program in the city of Hudson. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
