Judge dismisses terror threat charge against man accused of harassing Hudson mayor

Mar 10, 2021 3:30 pm

Aliya Schneider is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media Hudson City Court Judge John Connor Jr. Tue., Mar. 9, dismissed a charge of making a terroristic threat to Hudson Mayor Kamal Johnson filed against Melvin Lett, Jr. of Catskill. Connor upheld nine remaining charges of harassment against Lett during an appearance in Hudson City Court. Lett was represented by attorney Dennis McEvoy of Hudson. The Columbia County District Attorney’s office agreed with Connor's decision, but the office has until April 13, to appeal the dismissal. Lett has written more than 40 letters to Johnson from prison during the past year, Johnson said. The nine harassment violations still pending against him are all related to Johnson. “This is something, unfortunately, I’ve had to deal with for the past two years, year and a half, and my concern is always the safety of my family,” he said. Johnson said he does not know Lett personally. On his part, Lett said he and the mayor have met and they have spoken on the telephone. He called the terroristic threat and harassment allegations “frivolous.” Lett also pointed to the importance of his own safety and the safety of his daughters. In 2009, Lett pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary following a Leeds home invasion that involved three other men. He was sentenced to eight-and-a-half-year in prison, plus five years post-release supervision. NOTE: Johnson is a WGXC volunteer on-air programmer.Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
