Unpaid Coast Guard keeps breaking ice

Brian Nearing reports in the Albany Times Union that while temperatures plunge this weekend with snow falling from the skies, Coast Guard crews will be out on the Hudson River breaking up ice without receiving paychecks. The Coast Guard is not being paid during the federal government shutdown, but their work is considered "essential to commerce" so they are required to keep working. "Military members are not considered unemployed; they are currently unpaid," according to military policy. The forecast for Jan. 21 is for temperatures not to make the teens during the day, and fall below zero at night. The government has been closed 28 days after the President and Congressional Republicans and Democrats agreed on a budget deal, but Donald Trump then backed out of that deal after criticism from right-wing media figures.
