Common Cause urges lawmakers to make absentee ballot order law

Nick Reisman is reporting for State of Politics the political watchdog group Common Cause April 10, urged state lawmakers to codify the expansion of the absentee ballot criteria ordered last week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the June 23 elections. The governor had previously moved the special election and presidential primary from April 28 to June 23 in order to help stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Advocates pointed to the Wisconsin primary vote conducted last week, which resulted in low turnout, as something New York needs to avoid. State lawmakers this month contemplated the potential expansion of absentee voting criteria, which is narrow because of the language in the state constitution.
